Leverkusen Extends Unbeaten Run with 5-0 Victory over Bochum
Bayer Leverkusen continued its impressive unbeaten streak with a commanding 5-0 victory over Bochum in the Bundesliga, marking their 50th consecutive game without a loss across all competitions.
The win served as redemption for Leverkusen, erasing the memory of their 3-0 defeat to Bochum at the same venue on the final day of the previous season. Under the guidance of manager Xabi Alonso, Leverkusen has remained undefeated since then, surpassing Benfica's record of 48 consecutive unbeaten games from late 1963 to early 1965.
Leverkusen's unbeaten streak is unmatched among top-flight European teams. The team has already secured their first Bundesliga title and is set to compete in both the German Cup and Europa League finals.
Midfielder Robert Andrich expressed the significance of their achievements, focusing on the upcoming finals and avoiding excessive boasting. "I think already the Bundesliga – you can't imagine how much that means for the club or the fans," said Andrich. "We'll lift the trophy next week in our stadium. It's going to be very emotional. And then we go to Dublin and we go to Berlin. We want to get two titles there and then go on vacation with the triple in our backpack."
Leverkusen will face Italian side Atalanta in the Europa League final in Dublin on May 22, followed by the German Cup final against Kaiserslautern in Berlin three days later.
Despite Bochum's promising start, their momentum was disrupted by Felix Passlack's red card in the 15th minute. Leverkusen capitalized on the numerical advantage, with goals from Patrik Schick, Victor Boniface (from a penalty), Amine Adli, Josip Stanišić, and Álex Grimaldo.
With one round remaining in the league, Leverkusen has amassed 87 points, while Bochum remains three points above the relegation zone ahead of their final match against Werder Bremen.
In another Bundesliga fixture, injury-hit Bayern Munich bid farewell to manager Thomas Tuchel with a 2-0 victory over Wolfsburg. Lovro Zvonarek and Leon Goretzka found the net for Bayern, securing Tuchel's last home game in charge.
Bayern Munich demonstrated resilience despite the absence of key forwards, including Harry Kane, Jamal Musiala, Leroy Sané, Serge Gnabry, and Kingsley Coman. Tuchel, who announced his departure in February, was able to celebrate his final home game as Bayern's coach with a win.
Additionally, Hoffenheim secured a comprehensive 6-0 victory over relegated Darmstadt, while St. Pauli clinched promotion from the second division.
