Battered and Bruised, Gordon Aims to Ignite England's Offense

Anthony Gordon, sporting visible scars from a recent bike accident, is eager to revive England's faltering attack at Euro 2024. The Newcastle United winger, despite his injuries, is fully prepared to make an impact when England faces Slovakia in Sunday's last 16 match.

Gordon, with grazes on his face, hands, and arms, addressed the media on Friday, stating his readiness to contribute. "We went on what was meant to be a recovery bike ride," explained the 23-year-old. "I was going down a hill and tried to take a quick video on my phone for my family of what I was doing. Before I knew it I was on the floor. I got a few grazes but only a few cuts. It's not painful."

So far, Gordon's participation has been limited to a brief appearance in England's 0-0 draw against Slovenia in their third group game. Despite topping Group C, Gareth Southgate's team managed only two goals, drawing sharp criticism from both home and traveling England fans in Germany.

Fans and pundits alike are calling for Gordon's inclusion, citing his impressive record of 11 goals and 10 assists in 35 Premier League matches last season. Gordon believes his pace and direct approach could revitalize England's attack. "My main strength is that I'm very direct. I'm obviously quick, so I'm a nightmare for anyone I play against," he added. "I'm positive. Every time I get the ball I always try and make something happen. I'm not a very safe player, I'm always going for it, I'm always trying to put people on the back foot. I think with the players we've got, the likes of H (Harry Kane), who likes to drop deep, I think I add a different element to the team."

Despite underwhelming performances, expectations for Southgate's squad have increased, as they find themselves on the perceived easier side of the draw. England will avoid Germany, Spain, France, or Portugal until the final.

Gordon emphasized the importance of embracing the high expectations. "Pressure is a privilege because it means people are expecting things from you, which in return means they think you're good at what you do."

Should Gordon start in Gelsenkirchen, he would likely replace Phil Foden. Foden, who won the Premier League's player of the year award for his role in Manchester City's title win, is back with the England squad after attending the birth of his third child following the draw with Slovenia. Foden's tendency to drift inside from a wide left position has created a lopsided attack, further complicated by the absence of a natural left-back due to Luke Shaw's injury.
