Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani, aged 37, has formally announced his retirement from .

Nicknamed "El Matador," Cavani stands as Uruguay's second highest goal scorer of all time and the third most-capped player, boasting 58 goals in 136 appearances for the national team.

In a statement posted on social media, Cavani expressed gratitude for his time representing Uruguay, stating, "I have been and always will be blessed to have pulled on this shirt to represent what I love most in the world, my country."

He further added, "I want to dedicate myself to this new stage of my career and give everything I have to where I need to be. Today I've decided to retire, but I'll always follow you with my heart pounding, just like when I played in that beautiful shirt."

Cavani began his international career in 2008 and notably featured in four World Cup tournaments. In the 2010 World Cup, he played a pivotal role as Uruguay reached the semi-finals, earning him the title of the tournament's best player.

Among his notable achievements in the national jersey was the triumph in the 2011 Copa America held in Argentina.

Having played for esteemed clubs such as Napoli, Paris Saint-Germain, and , Cavani currently plies his trade for Boca Juniors in Argentina.
