Andy Murray Announces Withdrawal from Singles at Paris Games, Will Play Doubles Only
Andy Murray, the two-time Olympic tennis gold medalist, has withdrawn from the singles competition at the Paris Games and will only compete in the doubles event alongside Dan Evans. This decision was announced on Thursday.
Murray, 37, from Britain, has indicated that these Olympics will be the final event of his career. He has faced a series of injuries over the years, including a hip replacement in 2019. Most recently, he underwent surgery last month to remove a cyst from his spine.
Earlier this month, Murray withdrew from the singles competition at Wimbledon and participated in one doubles match with his older brother, Jamie.
“I've take the decision to withdraw from the singles to concentrate on the doubles with Dan. Our practice has been great and we're playing well together,” Murray said Thursday. “Really looking forward to getting started and representing GB one more time.”
The announcement of his withdrawal came shortly before the draw for the Olympic tennis tournament. The competition is set to begin on Saturday.
Murray's Olympic career includes singles gold medals at the London 2012 and Rio de Janeiro 2016 Games, making him the only tennis player to achieve this feat.
