PSG and Kylian Mbappe eliminated from Champions League
Borussia Dortmund secured their place in the Champions League final with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on Tuesday. The decisive goal came from Mats Hummels' header in the 50th minute, sealing a 2-0 aggregate win for Dortmund over PSG.
Despite late pressure from PSG, goalkeeper Gregor Kobel's heroics denied Kylian Mbappé and his teammates any chance of a comeback. Warren Zaire-Emery missed a golden opportunity for PSG, and Mbappé had already left the pitch by the time Dortmund celebrated their triumph.
“We beat a team like PSG two times and we again kept a clean sheet. We started really well and kept them away from the goal,” said Dortmund's coach Terzić, expressing his pride and satisfaction with his team's performance.
Dortmund now awaits the outcome of the clash between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich to determine their opponent in the final, set to be held at Wembley Stadium on June 1.
For PSG, the defeat extends their Champions League title drought, despite their significant investments in star players such as Mbappé, Neymar, and Lionel Messi. PSG's captain Marquinhos admitted their lack of efficiency and defensive lapses were the key factors in their loss.
PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi highlighted his team's missed opportunities, including hitting the post or crossbar multiple times over both legs. However, PSG's journey in the competition ended in disappointment, with five losses in total.
Mbappé's final appearance at the Parc des Princes will be against Toulouse on Sunday, marking the end of his tenure with PSG. He will then play his last game for the club in the French Cup final against Lyon on May 25th.
